Watch Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Questlove in the First Official Trailer for ‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’

The first official trailer for the upcoming This Is Spinal Tap sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, has debuted. If the scenes featured in the new promo are any indication, Spinal Tap II may be just as hilarious as the original 1984 rock mockumentary.

As previously reported, the new film features cameos by a variety of famous music stars, including Sirs Paul McCartney and Elton John, and both also appear in the trailer.

McCartney is featured in a scene where he’s chatting with fictional Spinal Tap documentarian Marty Di Bergi, played again by director Rob Reiner. The Beatles legend is discussing a suggestive lyric in the Spinal Tap tune “Big Bottom,” “I’d like to sink her with my pink torpedo.” Paul comments to Di Bergi, “‘Pink torpedo,’ that’s literature. Really.”

Later in the trailer, Spinal Tap is shown in concert, with Elton on stage playing piano and singing with the band as they perform their pompous prog-rock opus “Stonehenge.”

More Details About Spinal Tap II and the Trailer

As explained in an official synopsis, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues finds the estranged members of the hapless fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap being forced to reunite to play one last concert together years after their breakup. The three stars of the original film, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer, are back as, respectively, David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls.

Reiner, as Di Bergi, is on hand to document the aging group’s attempted comeback as the members also reflect on their past history and their mortality. According to the synopsis the band needs to hire what would be its 12th drummer, since the previous 11 have all met a premature death.

In the trailer, we discover the band’s most recent beat-keeper “sneezed himself into oblivion.” The preview includes a clip where the members of Spinal Tap chatting with Questlove of The Roots via Zoom as they try to convince him to play drums with them.

Tufnel asks Questlove, “So, you think you might fill the bill?” Questlove responds, “I don’t wanna die.” St. Hubbins then says, “We’ve only lost 11 or 12 drummers.”

The trailer also features flashbacks to This Is Spinal Tap. We also find out a bit about what the bandmates have been doing since the group broke up. We get a glimpse of McKean as St. Hubbins playing in a mariachi band. Shearer as Smalls is shown in a commercial for a crypto currency. And Guest as Tufnel apparently has been working in a cheese shop, while also playing loud guitar in a traditional acoustic Celtic band.
