Tool guitarist Adam Jones has revealed uncertainty about which Black Sabbath songs the band will perform at an upcoming tribute show. He shared his thoughts in an interview with Guitar World.
Jones addressed the ongoing decision-making process and his desire to deliver a strong performance when asked about Tool’s song selection for the show.
“There are so many,” Jones said. “We’re waiting because a lot of them are taken. I don’t know if it’s official yet, which songs we’re supposed to do.”
The guitarist expressed his eagerness to begin preparation once the final song choices are confirmed.
“I hope they tell us soon because I’d like to do a good job and learn it!” he continued. “To have the [Black Sabbath] band members watch us while we’re playing, I just want to make sure we fucking kill it.”
The performance will be part of Black Sabbath’s “Back to the Beginning” tribute event. Tool will collaborate alongside other notable artists including Tom Morello and Billy Corgan at the event.
Tool’s participation in this tribute event represents a significant moment for both the band and the broader rock community. The farewell concert brings together multiple generations of metal artists.
Loudwire reported that Tool initially weren’t going to take part in the farewell concert at all. Adam Jones revealed that after some hesitation among band members, it was Tom Morello’s invitation to join him and Billy Corgan that convinced them to participate. Jones learned that other Tool members, including Danny Carey and Maynard James Keenan, had signed on to play with different musicians. This helped finalize Tool’s involvement.
The tribute event features an impressive lineup of rock legends who will honor Black Sabbath’s legacy. Ultimate Classic Rock noted that the event includes Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, and Pantera, who will all cover Black Sabbath songs as Ozzy Osbourne is expected to perform selectively due to health issues. This star-studded roster demonstrates the profound influence Black Sabbath has had across multiple decades of heavy music.
The final song selections remain unconfirmed, but speculation suggests Tool might cover “Planet Caravan.” This track would be well-suited to Maynard James Keenan’s distinctive vocal style. The choice would represent an interesting departure from Black Sabbath’s heavier material. It would showcase the band’s more atmospheric and experimental side that aligns with Tool’s own musical approach.
The “Back to the Beginning” tribute serves as both a celebration of Black Sabbath’s pioneering role in heavy metal and a farewell to one of the genre’s most influential bands. For Tool, the opportunity to perform alongside the original Black Sabbath members represents a full-circle moment. It honors the very artists who helped shape the heavy music landscape they now inhabit.
