Tom Morello Honors Son’s Guitar Solo He Wished He’d Written

June saw Tom Morello and his son Roman debut new music. At the UK’s Download event the following month, he told Guitar Interactive Magazine that the 13-year-old played the guitar solo in ‘Soldier in the Army of Love’

“That guitar solo shreds. I wish I could say it was me, the guitarist said. “My son Roman worked eight hours a day during lockdown, while everyone else baked bread. Thus, I am now the family rhythm guitarist.”

“But no, one day I was walking by his bedroom, and he was playing these awesome Drop D heavy riffs. ‘What is that?’ He says, ‘I just came up with ’em.’ ‘Dad, do you think these riffs go together?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I think those riffs go together.’ He wrote the riffs for “Soldier in the Army of Love.” I made and toyed with it. The guitar solo is also his. With Father’s Day approaching, I’m proud to be making my hardest song in a while with my 13-year-old.

The father-son duo is making a music video for their collaboration. Their social media post included a behind-the-scenes clip.

On 14-year-old Nandi Bushell’s 2021 song ‘The Children Will Rise Up,’ Roman also played a solo. Tom Morello wrote the song with the two kids again.

The Rage Against The Machine guitarist’s son joined them backstage during their 2022 tour. Roman, like his father last year, played ‘Killing in the Name’ for soundcheck with Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk.
