Serj Tankian Reveals Why System Of A Down Are Careful About Their Comeback

Serj Tankian recently commented on System Of A Down’s return to performing. He addressed the band’s cautious approach in a statement shared on Kerrang.

When asked about the band’s surprising success in filling stadiums, Tankian reflected on the generational impact of System’s music. He expressed the band’s own astonishment at the demand for their performances.

“For us, it’s insane,” Tankian said. “It speaks volumes about people and their kids coming to shows and the generational power of music, particularly System’s music. The music really hits a nerve with people – we don’t exactly know why it does, but we’re very grateful.”

After years away from the spotlight, the band’s reappearance has generated unexpected momentum. Tankian explained that the group remains mindful of how they manage their return.

“We disappeared for so many years for our own personal reasons, and then we reappeared, and there’s this huge demand,” he continued. “We’re just shocked by it. We want to be careful and make people happy with our performances but not overdo it.”

System Of A Down’s deliberate approach to their comeback prioritizes quality performances over overextension. This measured strategy reflects the band’s broader philosophy as they navigate their most active period in years.

The band has indeed made a major comeback in 2024 and 2025 with a series of high-profile stadium tours. 1035 Bob FM reported that the band expanded their 2025 stadium tour dates significantly, demonstrating the massive demand Tankian referenced. The North American leg alone featured six stadium shows across the U.S. and Canada. Two nights each took place in East Rutherford, Chicago, and Toronto, running from July through September 2025.

The band’s international reach has expanded considerably. Euronews noted that System of a Down announced their first European tour since 2017, set for summer 2026. This marks their return to Europe after a nine-year absence. The seven-date run will feature Queens of the Stone Age and Acid Bath as support. Stops include Stockholm, Paris, Milan, Berlin, London, and Warsaw.

Tankian’s preference for a measured approach aligns with the band’s touring strategy. Metal Injection revealed that Tankian has expressed a preference for shorter tours and special one-off events. He cited both artistic and physical reasons for this approach. This philosophy has shaped how the band approaches their comeback, ensuring they maintain the quality and energy their fans expect without compromising the band members’ well-being.

Both fans and critics have embraced the band’s recent performances. During their South American tour in April and May 2025, System of a Down played seven stadium shows across Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. This marked their first return to South America since 2015. The band delivered energetic sets featuring classics while also playing “Streamline” live for the first time in 20 years. This demonstrates their commitment to both honoring their legacy and exploring new material.
