Matt Cameron Announces First Project After Pearl Jam Exit

Matt Cameron has revealed his first musical project following his recent departure from Pearl Jam. He announced an upcoming performance with his Wipers tribute band Is This Real?, as shared on the band’s Instagram account.

The announcement details an upcoming concert featuring Cameron alongside fellow musicians Hiro Yamamoto and Ed Roth.

“Your chance to see Is This Real? Saturday, September 13th at The Triple Door in Seattle,” the band announced. “Don’t miss an evening with Matt Cameron, Hiro Yamamoto, and Ed Roth. Tickets are limited, so secure your spot now.”

This marks Cameron’s first announced project since he revealed his departure from Pearl Jam in recent weeks. The Seattle show will take place at The Triple Door venue.

Cameron’s commitment to Is This Real? represents more than just a side project. The band has evolved significantly since its formation. Pearl Jam Online reported that Is This Real? was originally formed as a tribute to the influential Portland punk band the Wipers. The band has now evolved beyond covers and is preparing to release their first original songs.

The Wipers connection runs deep in Seattle’s music history. Pearl Jam Online noted that the Wipers, led by Greg Sage, were key pioneers of American punk and alternative rock in the late 1970s. Their album Is This Real? (1980) remains a cult classic that inspired many Seattle musicians, including Nirvana.

Cameron has been actively performing with Is This Real? even before his Pearl Jam departure. Guerrilla Candy documented the band’s dedication to honoring the Wipers’ legacy with live performances in 2023. These included shows opening for bands like Walking Papers at the Crocodile in Seattle.

The drummer’s musical activities extend beyond Is This Real?. He has maintained an active recording schedule. Guerrilla Candy confirmed that Cameron also released an EP with The Melvins earlier this year. This showcases his continuous musical involvement beyond Pearl Jam.

Cameron’s departure from Pearl Jam marks the end of a significant chapter in rock history. Wikipedia states that Matt Cameron joined Pearl Jam in 1998 and was simultaneously a member of Soundgarden until their 2017 breakup. He announced his Pearl Jam departure on July 7, 2025. He remains regarded as one of rock’s most versatile drummers with two inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside both bands.
