Joe Perry reveals Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler “doesn’t want to tour”

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has ruled out another tour with the classic rock band, stating singer Steven Tyler “doesn’t want to” and “can’t tour”.

Perry is set to embark on an extensive tour of North America with The Joe Perry Project for the first time in two years. The run of dates begins in Tampa, Florida, on August 13th and concludes in Los Angeles on September 17th.

It’s his first live venture since Aerosmith’s ill-fated farewell tour. In September 2023, three shows into their run, Aerosmith announced the postponement of all future shows due to a serious vocal injury suffered by their frontman until 2024.

Unfortunately, Tyler’s vocal situation did not improve. Last August, Aerosmith confirmed they had retired from touring, and all of their future shows had been cancelled. Since then, Tyler returned to the stage for a one-off charity event in February and performed two songs at Ozzy Osbourne’s farewell concert in Birmingham.

Despite Tyler being able to perform a short set, Perry has confirmed that the possibility of another Aerosmith tour remains off the table.

In a new interview with WBUR, he said: “I would bet that there’s an Aerosmith show left. There’s been talk about doing a documentary; that might be part of it. I’ve been spending a lot of time with Steven and he just doesn’t want to tour and he can’t tour.”

The guitarist continued: “It’s tough. I’m not sure I would want to go out and book another 40-city tour. It’s a long way to the top and staying there takes it out of you, especially an Aerosmith tour.”

Only last month, Perry confirmed during an interview on Sirius XM’s Trunk Nation that Aerosmith were “talking about” returning to the stage. He shared, “I know there’s gotta be at least another Aerosmith gig, and I’m not looking forward to putting the set list together for that one, but I don’t know, man. We’ll just have to see.”

While he was optimistic that Tyler would be able to perform another full Aerosmith gig, Perry didn’t mention a possible tour. He also admitted that a major challenge would be “a matter of getting there.”
