Gene Simmons recently shared his thoughts on Taylor Swift’s tribute to KISS during a 2009 performance. He recalled the memorable moment in an interview with Parade.
The KISS frontman reflected on Swift’s decision to honor the band by dressing up as original lead guitarist Ace Frehley during Keith Urban’s Escape Together tour.
“The entire band came out and punked Keith Urban at a show, and Taylor was dressed like our original lead guitarist Ace [Frehley], and the whole band was dressed up in KISS [makeup],” Simmons said.
Simmons expressed his appreciation for the gesture. He added his characteristic humor to the situation.
“There are people who feel it’s cool the gesture was appreciated,” he continued. “It’s a nod of the head, because you can’t get me to dress like Boy George!”
The rock legend also praised Swift’s career evolution and artistic choices.
“She’s phenomenal,” Simmons said. “She started off in country music, and then just did what she wanted to do, which is go mainstream.”
The memorable prank has become a celebrated moment in both artists’ careers. It showcases Swift’s playful side during her early touring days.
Taste of Country reported that the surprise appearance took place during a Kansas City show on the final night of Urban’s Escape Together tour. Swift and her band members appeared onstage in full KISS makeup during Urban’s performance of “Kiss a Girl.” This created an unforgettable moment for the audience.
Loudwire revealed that Urban himself was initially fooled by the elaborate costumes and makeup. The country star later described the prank as “so good.” He admitted he thought it was the actual KISS band taking the stage during his performance.
Coyote Country noted that Urban handled the unexpected interruption with grace and professionalism despite being completely surprised by the stunt. He continued his performance without missing a beat. This demonstrated his experience as a seasoned performer while embracing the playful nature of the prank.
Simmons has continued to encourage fans to witness the performance for themselves. Music Radar documented that the KISS bassist actively promotes the clip, stating: “I invite everybody to go on YouTube and tag ‘Taylor Swift Kiss band.’ You’ll see Taylor and her band coming out in Kiss makeup and doing a song. Oh yeah!”
