Matt Sorum has expressed interest in joining Sammy Hagar’s band following recent drummer changes. He made his intentions known through a playful comment on Sammy Hagar’s Instagram post.
Hagar shared a post about his band’s upcoming Spokane concert featuring Jorge Palacios on drums. His caption read about the excitement surrounding the performance.
“The boys are back in town, well, just for a party,” Hagar said. “Somebody is about to have some fun.”
Sorum quickly responded with a lighthearted comment. He suggested he should have been considered for the position.
“Damn Sammy!” Sorum said. “You know my number.”
Jason Bonham took a break from Hagar’s band due to his mother’s health issues. Kenny Aronoff initially stepped in as a replacement before Palacios was brought in for the Spokane show.
The drummer situation reflects the ongoing evolution of Hagar’s current touring lineup. The band has seen multiple changes in recent months as the Red Rocker continues his active performance schedule.
Consequence of Sound reported that Hagar’s band has been through several drummer changes recently. Kenny Aronoff serves as a frequent fill-in drummer. Aronoff is currently handling drumming duties for Hagar’s ongoing 2025 Las Vegas residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM. The lineup also includes guitarist Joe Satriani and bassist Michael Anthony, both longtime collaborators and Van Halen alumni.
The Las Vegas residency showcases the band’s versatility despite the lineup shifts. Classic Rock 96.5 noted that the residency features deep cuts from Hagar’s Van Halen catalog as well as solo works. This demonstrates the chemistry between the veteran musicians even with rotating drummers.
The dynamic nature of Hagar’s current band setup allows for flexibility in booking different drummers for various shows. Ultimate Classic Rock revealed that fans have been enjoying exclusive setlists that change nightly during the Las Vegas shows. This highlights how the band adapts to different musical arrangements regardless of who’s behind the kit.
Sorum’s public interest in joining the group adds another layer to the ongoing drummer rotation. The former Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver member brings significant rock credentials that could complement Hagar’s established lineup of seasoned musicians.
